Falls to the Saxons 491 CE
Nennius (800 CE) mentions the Celtic fort of Caer-Anderida which is Pevensey (
Latin Anderitum) in Sussex.
It is mentioned
in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles as a Celtic stronghold overrun by the invading
South Saxons under King Aelle in 491 CE.
King Aelle is mentioned by Bede (673?
-735 CE) as an important warrior king and later sources credit him with the
founding of a South Saxon Kingdom (Sussex) in the late 5th century.
Although there
is no direct connection with King Arthur, these records are important as this
event took place within the accepted King Arthur period and indicates that
there were still Celtic strongholds in the West of Britain during that period.
